Weather conditions were ideal for the second day of testing at the Valencia “Ricardo Tomo” circuit for the Celani, DFXtreme, Perdercini and Yamaha Italia teams. 18 degrees and constant sunshine favoured the riders as they got down to the important task of preparing for the start of the season.
Despite being in poor physical condition after a bad crash yesterday, Michel Fabrizio put in some good work to get the bike set up to his liking. He was testing a bike with more sophisticated electronics, and using a motorcycle with the improved electronics but a 2006 engine he put in a 1:36.580 lap, the best of the day. Very close was Steve Martin, his team mate at DFXtreme. The Australian continued to test new cycle parts, lapping in 1:37.200. Steve also tested the latest Honda CBR1000RR at the end of the afternoon, making a good impression.
The pressure was on during the second day, with the Celani Team working particularly hard. Alessandro Polita tested a new braking set-up with lightened callipers and a radial master cylinder for the first time on track. First impressions were positive but decisions on its use will be made after the next test. The work done with the new Ohlins forks paid off, allowing 68 laps to be completed with a best time of 1:37.33
Claudio Corti always puts on a show at Valencia, and this test was no exception. He was fastest in the morning after finding a good compromise setting for the front forks, recording five laps in succession around the 1:38 mark and finishing a race-simulation with a time of 1:38.7, close to Vizziello’s 2004 record of 1:38.4. Michele Pirro was within six tenths (1:39.3) of his team mate despite his inexperience and his focus on not making any mistakes. Massimo Roccoli suffered general traction problems on the Team Yamaha Italia R6, recording a best lap of 1:39.5.
Dean Ellison’s introduction to the Ducati 999 continued with him completing 30 laps.
