20-year-old Ulsterman Eugene Laverty will make his 250cc grand prix debut this season after being handed a 'fantastic opportunity' by the LCR team - with whom he will test later this month.

Laverty, who finished third in the British Supersport Championship last year despite missing a number of key rounds through injury, will have his first ever 250cc ride in his first test with the team at Barcelona in February.

"I was at the right place at the right time and been given a fantastic opportunity," said Eugene. "The team seem a really nice bunch and I just can't wait to get working with the. Not only have I been training hard in the gym but I've also been learning Italian because I want them to know just how much I want to do well for them. My first ride on the bike will be at the Barcelona test next week. It will be the first time I've ridden a 250cc machine and also out of the 17 rounds this season 12 of the circuits will be new to me. I've got a new bike and a lot of circuits to learn and I can't wait to get started."

The LCR team is run by former 125cc grand prix winner Lucio Cecchinello who masterminded grand prix victories for Australian Casey Stoner in the 125 and 250cc classes. The team will also run Spaniard Carlos
