With the opening round of the grand prix season just over two weeks away all the MotoGP, 250 and 125cc teams have their on track dress rehearsal for the season with the official test at Jerez in Spain this week.
The 2.748 mile circuit in Southern Spain, which stages the second grand prix of the season, hosted the 250cc teams on Monday and Tuesday, the 125cc teams will test today (Wednesday) and Thursday with the MotoGP teams in action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
On Sunday just to give the test an even more competitive edge, the MotoGP teams will contest a special 40-minute qualifying session with the fastest rider winning a BMW car. The session counts towards the Fastest Qualifier of the season prize of another BMW car which is awarded to the rider who sets the fastest time from the Jerez test and the 18 grand prix qualifying sessions.
It promises to be the perfect aperitif to the hugely anticipated season when all the MotoGP stars clash for first time in Europe this year. It is likely that Anglo/American rider John Hopkins who damaged his hands and feet in a spectacular crash from the GSV - R800 Rizla Suzuki in Qatar last week will miss the test. Suzuki has already drafted in test rider Kousuke Akiyoshi for the three-day test in order to continue the development or the Suzuki.
The very best riders in the world will be continuing their amazing testing programme which has the new 800cc machines already lapping faster than the 990cc machines did last year. Lap records are set to tumble once the season kicks off in earnest
