Marco Melandri was a surprise pace-setter on a rain-hit opening day of Moto GP’s curtain-raising test at Jerez in Spain.
The 24-year-old Italian, who has not figured near the front at all in three months of winter testing so far, lapped the track in 1:42,563 – some three seconds off the lap record - on the day that his Gresini Honda unveiled their new livery.
Australian sophomore Casey Stoner was second fastest for Ducati – less than a tenth of a second down on Melandri on a day that perhaps proved that Bridgestone-tyred machines will have the edge over those on Michelins in cool conditions this season.
Third was Dani Pedrosa on the best of the Michelin-tyred Repsol Hondas, while his veteran Spanish countryman Carlos Checa was next up on his LCR machine.
Alex Barros was fifth on his d'Antin Ducati with Randy de Puniet sixth on his Kawasaki.
Ducatis filled the next two positions with Loris Capirossi on his works bike ahead of the d'Antin machine of Alex Hofmann.
Toni Elias made it two Gresini machines in the top nine with Shinya Nakano's Konica Minolta Honda rounding out the top ten.
Yamaha, who have set the pre-season pace so far, were down in 11th and 13th as Colin Edwards and five-time champion Valentino Rossi ran a one-off blue livery.
World champion Nicky Hayden fared even worse, with the Repsol Honda rider 19th, faster only than Kenny Roberts Jr, Kosuka Akiyoshi and the two Ilmors.
