Marco Melandri kept up his surprising pace by topping the second day of Moto GP testing at Jerez in Spain, despite a high-speed crash.
The 24-year-old Italian, who set the pace on Friday as well, fell at turn seven early in the afternoon while doing a reported 100 mph.
But, following a visit to the medical centre – where he was given a clean bill of health - the Gresini Honda rider stormed around the circuit in 1:40.383 late on the day to put himself at the top of the timesheets again.
Valentino Rossi was another to put in a super-quick time right at the end of the day as the five-time world champion established his Yamaha in second place – 0.025 seconds slower than his countryman.
Dani Pedrosa, who had swapped places with Rossi for most of the afternoon following fog that put most off lapping in the morning, was third fastest on his Repsol Honda while Alex Hofmann was a superb fourth for d'Antin Ducati – one spot ahead of the works machine ridden by Casey Stoner.
A surprising quartet rounded out the top ten with Carlos Checa's LCR Honda, Randy de Puniet's Kawasaki, Colin Edwards' Yamaha and Makoto Tamada's Tech-3 Yamaha all ahead of world champion Nicky Hayden.
Ilmor were big improvers on the day as they were only four seconds off the pace – more than a second closer to the front than they had been on Friday.
Sunday sees Moto GP's official pre-season showdown test – a 40 minute session where each of the riders present will compete to win a brand-new BMW.
