James Toseland continued with his determined form during first qualifying for round two of the Corona Extra Superbike World Championship at the scenic Phillip Island.

The Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider goes into the second round with a tied lead in the championship with Max Biaggi and strong competition from the local Australian riders, such as the current World Champion Troy Bayliss, who Toseland relegated to second place.

Bayliss the Xerox Ducati rider had lead the bulk of the session but only had the very slimmest of margins over Toseland, with a 0.003sec gap. With nine minutes left to go, Toseland put in his fast lap with a time of 1min 32.04secs, dipping under the lap record.

Third place on the provisional front row of the grid belongs to Fonsi Nieto on the PSG-1 Kawaski following a late charge. The final spot went to Lorenzo Lanzi, team-mate to Bayliss.

Yamaha Italia's riders top and tail the second row of the grid with Troy Corser fifth and Noriyuki Haga in eighth place. Splitting the Yamahas were the Alstare Corona Extra Suzuki team of Max Biaggi in sixth and the unlucky Yukio Kagayama in seventh. Kagayama crashed ten minutes into the session and had to attend the medical centre following the incident.

Max Biaggi escaped injury, however, from a freak crash that put the Roman into the pit wall as he entered the pits! Biaggi blamed the crash on hitting sand.

Rounding out the top ten were Ruben Xaus and Max Neukirchiner, while Britain's Dean Ellison finished twenty first.
