Pasini on Jerez Pole
Mattia Pasini improved on his Friday time by just over a tenth of a second to claim pole position for the second round of the 125cc world championship at Jerez in Spain.
The 21-year-old Italian lapped the track in 1:47.245 on his Polaris World Aprilia to take the top spot by 0.238 from Hungary's Gabor Talmacsi on an Aspar Aprilia.
It was the third pole of Pasini's career and also put him at the front of the grid for the second year in a row for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Lukas Pesek was third fastest for Seedorf Derbi while Sergio Gadea improved from 17th overnight to complete the front row on the second Aspar bike - one spot ahead of his championship-leading team-mate Hector Faubel.
Tomoyoshi Koyama faded from an overnight third to sixth on his KTM, with 15-year-old Pol Espargaro coming from nowhere to grab seventh on his Campetella Aprilia.
Simone Corsi (Skilled Aprilia), Pablo Nieto (Blusens Aprilia) and Sandro Cortese (Caffe Latte Aprilia) completed the top ten.
Britain's Bradley Smith was 11th for Repsol Honda while Danny Webb crashed on his way to 30th on his Arie Molenaar Honda, but emerged unhurt.
That was more than can be said for Frenchman Mike di Meglio, who broke his collarbone in a horrfiying high-side on his Team Scot Honda and will not now compete in the race. He is also a doubt for the next round in Turkey.
