Xerox Ducati's Troy Bayliss took provisional pole at Donington Park in tricky damp conditions ahead of round three of the Corona Extra Superbike World Championship.
Bayliss upped the pace as the track started to dry out and was the first rider to dip into the 1min 32s. Joining him in the low 32s was his fellow country man, Troy Corser on his Yamaha Italia machine.
Ruben Xaus riding the Sterilgarda Ducati slipped into third place towards the end of the session, just ousting Britain's James Toseland who had been residing there. The Hannspree Honda rider finished the session in fourth with his team-mate Roberto Rolfo in tenth.
Regis Laconi appears to be getting to grips with the PSG-1Kawasaki and qualified in fifth place. Karl Muggeridge who is still recovering from a dislocated ankle put in a strong performance to finish sixth.
Alstare Corona Extra's Yukio Kagayama qualified in seventh but crashed out heavily at the close of the session. The unlucky Japanese rider fell as the fast paced Craner Curves and has been taken to the medical centre.
Dean Ellison qualified his Pedercini Ducati in twentieth, and wild card rider Aaron Zanotti was twenty second.
The weather and cool conditions caught out a few riders leading to several crashes - Corser, Lanzi, and Xaus all hit the deck.
