Roberto Locatelli has regained consciousness after a week in a coma, according to reports in his Italian homeland.
The 32-year-old Gilera rider had been placed in a coma after a horrifying accident in practice for last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix in which he sustained horrific injuries to his face, collarbone, lungs and left ankle.
But Moto GP's medical delegate Dr Claudio Costa told Italian sports daily Gazetta dello Sport that the rider was now breathing on his own and even talking.
Dr. Costa said: "Since the early hours of the night, after his lungs saw some good improvement, Locatelli was taken off the respirator and started breathing on his own.
"His level of consciousness had a strong improvement immediately. He also started talking to his fiancee and to his physiotherapist Francesco Chionne. We must now wait for two days in order to consolidate this result."
Medical teams will not attempt any reconstruction work on his face until Locatelli has had a third CAT scan in the coming days at the Bologna hospital at which he is staying.
