Michael Laverty has taken the win in the opening round of the 2007 Maxxis British Supersport Championship at Brands Hatch. The race was restarted after just seven laps when the leaders, pole-sitter Dennis Hobbs and Laverty collided at Surtees.

Hobbs was unable to make the restart due to concussion. The grid was defined by the positions when the red flag came out. As the race got underway, it was Ducati-mounted Martin Jessopp who emerged at the front, ahead of Virgin Media Yamaha rider Tom Grant and Laverty on his Relentless Suzuki.

However, a few moments later the safety car was brought out following a crash at Druids. Craig Sproston, Alex Lowes and Cup riders Matt Layt, Ben Castleton and Ross Walter were involved in the pile-up but fortunately all walked away unscathed.

On lap four, the safety car retired to the pit lane and the race was once again in full swing. Grant's early promise in his debut race was shattered by the announcement of a ride-through penalty, as he had apparently jumped the start.

This left Jessopp, Laverty, Ian Lowry and Jamie Robinson to battle it out over the remaining five laps. Laverty managed to hold off the somewhat desperate attempts of Jessopp and Robinson, who were swapping paint at every corner. Meanwhile, Virgin Media Yamaha rider Billy McConnell was speeding his way through the pack, appearing in fifth spot on lap nine.

It all went wrong just moments later though, as McConnell crashed heavily, injuring his back and bringing out the red flags once again.

The result was declared, and Laverty named the winner, ahead of Martin Jessopp and Jamie Robinson. Ian Lowry just missed out on the podium in fourth.

Aaron Walker inherited fifth spot from McConnell, former champion Easton was sixth, ahead of TT legend John McGuinness and Dan Cooper. Steven Neate and Ian Hutchinson rounded out the top ten.
