View Full Version : ACU
Right as some are aware, i turned up to Cadwell, nearly filling my boots before there, excited to do a track day, on my nearly new baby, in amongst a load of junkies...not so, i was refused entry because i have a restricted licence (MSV insurance issue) iv ranted and raved enuf and given up. the only way around it seems to get an ACU licence.
So anyone gone for one, know about them or how when where and how much? OR if there is another way about it?
The only thing i have been suggested to look into is a restricted track day, but they are few and far between and id rather have the option to come out when and where i please to join junkies and track anywhere.
So PLEASE! any info as to how i can get on a track, or get an ACU licence please let me know! saved alot for Cadwell so have that all sitting waiting to get me on track and willing to do most thing (not sleep with the boss of MSV...altho....!) and i think it would be helpful to remind anyone with a resticted licence :
IF DOING A TRACK DAY DONT PAY BEFORE U CHECKED U CAN ACTUALLY GET ON TO THE TRACK!
Thanks ya'll!
Fella the ACU licence is a piece of piss - you attend a day course in Derby and then have a Doctor sign a form + any eye test and your licensed up
Check out this link and it will give you all your information http://www.acu.org.uk/info/joinus.aspx

A mate of mine got his ACU last year. Fairly straight forward, e-mail ACU for more info. I'm pretty sure for the on-track assesment you will need a fully lock wired race bike that will go through scrutineering

Do you have to do an on track assesment? I know I didn't but then I do hold a full GB bike licence maybe its different if you running a restricted licence
Is the bike provided? not really fancying the idea of locking up my street bike just for a test :S thanks alot for the quick responce's tho!
Have heard theres an assesment, dunno if its rest, or for fulls, assuming both?

My mate Bob had to do one,and he does have a full licence, but he's a loon and maybe forgot to tell them.
With regard to bike, he has his own R1 race bike and is currently building a K6 thou up from scratch on an ex crescent frame
John
Did my licence the end of last year - no assesment required then - rules must have changed for the new year etc
Still if your running a restricted licence I guess it would be good for the extra track time etc

You dont have to a track assessment if you have a road licence, the only club that I can tell that requires you to do an on track thing is bemsee all other clubs are just happy with an ACU licence.
All you need to do is go to the ACU web site and download the application form and fill it in, you will need an eye site test but unless you have an existing medicall condition there is no need to visit your GP. Once you've filled your form in you will have to join a club as they will need to stamp and sign a section at the back, then you can attend the in house training day in Rugby where they sit you in a room with other like minded peeps cr@ping yourself about whether your gunna pass and chat to you about the rules n regs, tell you a few war stories etc then give you a multi choice test which was soooooo easy my wife could've past it, (shes not thick just knows naff all about racing  ) you do the test get the person your sitting next to to mark it and thats basically it, a couple of days later you'll get your nice new red race licence:)
good luck mate

my son has same issue and we nearly found out the hard way too. the process is exactly same as flashart describes cos he is doing at the mo. it is rugby, not derby btw!! i know everyone from the sunny south tink the midlands is just a blob in the middle, but rugby is about 30 miles south!!!!!:acute: :acute:
Exactly as flashart said, i done the competitor trainging course in runcorn (cheshire) they had 2 dates up here that were organised by the wirral 100 racing club. I was the same, went to do the course and was crapping myself thinkin i wasnt gonna get through it, but to be honest it was all common sense really, there was 19 questions and out of the 35 of us that were there, there was one guy who got 2 questions wrong, everyone else (including me) got them all right.
The eye site test was £10 at asda.
Competitor trainging course was £60.
ACU licence fee was £42.
And joining fee for the club i went with was £10.
The ACU licence lasts only 1 year, the trainging course and eye test is valid for 3 years.
Hope it helps!

The licence runs from Jan to Dec though not a year from issue and once you've done the ctc you dont have to redo it after 3 years unless you let your licence lapse.
What club let you join for a tenner?

Sorry Midlands peeps
Thanks for all the gen guys! wasnt sure if anyone had done it!
Morg let us know how it goes with your kid (so i can learn too!) but all the best to him,
Downloaded the forms, just got to find a printer so i can start sifting through paper work! And thanks for the heads up on the tests etc, just one quicky, what kind of questions are they? Im guessing not, who won the 125cc Stock champs in 1992 or anything like that, but more about locking wire, track etequte etc?
Ta!
The questions are about basic track/bike knowlege, for example, what does the yellow flag mean or what colour ACU sticker is required on a helmet that is being used for roadracing, etc.
Pretty easy stuff and they go through it throughout the day then in the afternoon they do a test on it, but as i said when i went, 34 out 35 guys that were there got every single question right.
