125s: Pasini on Turkish Pole

Mattia Pasini stormed to his second pole position in a row for the 125cc Turkish Grand Prix, narrowly avoiding two clashes with backmarkers in the process.

The 21-year-old Italian lapped the Istanbul Park circuit in 2:04.722 on his Polaris World - improving by just over a second on his Friday time and ensursing the fourth pole of his career.

But he was almost sideswiped by tail-enders Federico Sandi and Hugo van den Berg on two separate laps in the final complex of corners.

Hector Faubel was two tenths of a second slower on his Aspar Aprilia with Italian Simone Corsi qualifying on the front row for the first time this season on his Skilled Racing machine.

Championship leader Gabor Talmacsi was fourth on the second Aspar bike as Aprilias locked out the front row.

Fifth was Lukas Pesek on a Seedorf Derbi - and he would have been higher up had he not crashed - although without much damage - at the triple-apex turn eight in the final minutes of the session.

Sixth was Tomoyoshi Koyama's KTM, but the Japanese rider left it very late to move up from 13th place after the chequered flag had fallen.

Seventh was Pasini's team-mate Joan Olive with Austrian rider Michael Ranseder eighth - the best grid spot of his career - on an Ajo Derbi.

Nico Terol's Seedorf Derbi and Simone Cortese's Emmi Aprilia completed the top ten.

Britain's Bradley Smith slipped back from ninth to 13th on his Repsol Honda - but was still the best of the riders on Japanese machinery.

Kev Coghlan will start a career-best 27th for Scot Honda with Danny Webb three places further back for Arie Molenaar Honda.
