Suzuki's Ben Spies won the Saturday race at Fontana, beating teammate Mat Mladin by 6.739 seconds. Yamaha's Eric Bostrom was third.

Mladin and Spies circulated in order for most of the first ten laps, with Mladin holding the lead for all but a few yards. Spies tried several times to take the lead but Mladin would not relent. Once Mladin made a close move to take back the lead from Spies in turn four on lap ten. On the 11th lap, Spies took the lead and he immediately upped the pace with a 1:24.335 to Mladin's 1:25.4.

Spies upped his pace to a 1:24 flat on the next lap. Ben, on harder tires than Mladin, rode off after he took the lead and extended it to over six seconds.

"We were ruffling each other's feathers early on," said Spies. "Mat kicked my butt last week and we had to regroup."

"I knew early in the race that I was going to be in trouble," said Mladin. I was trying to make myself as wide as possible."

Mladin fell into the clutches of Eric Bostrom. Mladin was relegated to third for several laps, but he rallied to re-pass the Yamaha rider. Mladin was able to beat Bostrom by 2.25 seconds at the flag.

It was the first podium finish for Yamaha since they returned to Superbike earlier this season.

Suzuki's Mat Mladin beat teammate Ben Spies in the second Superbike race at Fontana, winning by 0.035 seconds in a tight battle. Eric Bostrom took third, his second podium of the year for Yamaha.

Mladin led the early going, pushing hard to eek out a 2.5 second lead. Spies rebounded, closing the gap and taking the point briefly on lap 23 after Mladin made a mistake.

But Mladin reversed the trend and retook the lead in traffic soon after he had surrendered it.

The last five laps saw Spies circulate right on Mladin's tail. Spies was unable to formulate a move to get by Mladin. The race to the flag saw Mladin take his 54th career AMA Superbike victory.

"We found something about ten o'clock last night in the truck," said Mladin. "It was good enough, but only just."

Spies currently leads Superbike points 173 to 164 over Mladin.

Suzuki's Tommy Hayden had a good race and moved to fourth place, past the Hondas. Jake Zemke was the quicker of the Honda runners this weekend.

The Kawasakis of Roger Hayden and Jamie Hacking moved past Aaron Yates of the Jordan Suzuki team during the race to take seventh and eighth.

NFS Honda's Doug Chandler finished 11th, the three-time AMA Superbike champ's best race of the year.
