Shane Byrne left it late to take pole position at Snetterton ahead of round five of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship.

He lapped the fast Norfolk track in 1min 4.908secs on his Stobart Honda and he put this time in with just two minutes of the session left to run. This is the first pole for the Stobart squad in three years and it looks like Byrne could finally be on for some good luck. Last year while riding for Rizla Suzuki, Byrne suffered a brake problem which resulted in him crashing and knocking himself unconscious. As he had been knocked out he was not allowed to race on medical grounds.

Johnny Rea on the HM Plant Honda was also on a charge but had no answer for the fast form found by Byrne. He lines up in second place on the grid next to Championship leader Gregorio Lavilla and his team-mate Leon Haslam on the Airwaves Ducatis.

Defending Superbike Champion Ryuichi Kiyonari heads row two of the grid and next to him is Tom Sykes, team-mate to Byrne. Tommy Hill on the Virgin Media Optoma Loans Yamaha is in seventh place and on the second row of the grid which is where he was hoping to be.

Rizla Suzuki's Chris Walker put in a superb qualifying finishing in eighth place following his lower positions during free practice. His team-mate, Cal Crutchlow continued his unlucky form crashing out at the Bomb Hole towards the end of the session. This crash has left him just outside the top ten in eleventh place.

Simon Andrews on the Jentin Yamaha had a good session qualifying in ninth place, and rounding out the top ten was Karl Harris on the Hydrex Honda.

Hudson Kennaugh who is temporarily replacing the injured James Haydon on the Virgin Yamaha was sixteenth although he had hoped to be fourteenth. Dean Thomas had a difficult session with a technical problem just seven minutes into the session; this has left him down in nineteenth place on his Samsung Suzuki.

Leon Camier on the Bike Animal Honda had a nightmare session as he only managed two laps before returning to his garage for the remainder of qualifying with a technical problem. This has relegated him to the very back row of the grid for both BSB races.
