mate, don't touch a bike that doesn't have numbers unless it is a replacement frame where the number block/space thingy is obviously untouched, just not been stamped. there is only one reason to grind a number off!!!

scrappers may have the numbers stamped over but they should still be legible

Not quite correct. A cat b insurance write off has to have its numbers removed as per the insurers code.

Cat D, minimal damage, can go back on road
Cat C some damage, can go back on road
Cat B some damage, cannot go back on road with O/E numbers
Cat A heavy damage, can only be broken for parts or crushed

So its perfectly feasible to buy a perfectly legal Cat B frame from a breaker with the last 6 digits defaced. Usually the bike has been stolen and only recovered after the insurance has paid out.

I've heard some people say they have had no trouble from the scrutineers for a cat B frame, but the ACU guidelines say all numbers must be perfectly legible and untouched, so to be safe I'd say to get a bike with numbers if you can.
