British Superbike star Jonny Rea has been prevented from making his Moto GP debut at Donington Park this weekend by Honda.

The 20-year-old Ulsterman was due to race as a wildcard for the KR team, but with a full BSB programme and a works ride at the Suzuka Eight hours in August confirmed, top brass in Japan blocked the move to stop his schedule becoming too crowded.

Honda Racing boss Neil Tuxworth said: Although Honda Europe were happy for Jonathan to take part, it was felt at an international level, after taking into account the job he has at the Suzuka Eight-Hour, and in BSB, that the right course would be for him not to compete.

The news comes as a blow to Rea, who broke his British Superbike duck for the HM Plant team at Mondello Park at the weekend, just seven days after triumphing at the Suzuka 300km race on a shared bike with Ryuichi Kiyonari.

But he is philosophical for the future and hopes he will have further chances to race in Motorcycling's top category.

Obviously it's disappointing, but I've said all along that my priority is BSB and the Eight-Hour," said Rea.

I am very grateful to all the people who have put this deal together, Honda and Team KR, and I am hoping this won't be my last opportunity for a MotoGP ride this year."
