Ok been asked a question

who on here Races and in what series and what do you need to race other than an ACU licence

Also when you sign up for a season do you have to pay monies in advance and what paperwork do you get in return ??

Serious answers only pls

Very good question Tink, I`ve always wanted to know, just in case I ever lost the plot and decided to try myself.

Okay, currently racing various rounds with Derby Phoenix this year but have also done a round with New Era but planning to do a whole season next year once I've decided on which club to go with.

To get your ACU licence you need to get the application form where theres a part where you need to have an eye test carried out, you need to join a club and have the club secretary sign/stamp the form then you need to go for a classroom test (very very simple) with your application form you have to prove compitency to ride this can be either proof of having Cat A (bike) on your licence or you can get a certificate from somwhere like ron hasslams race school or some clubs like BEMSEE run a day where you can show competency and do your class room test , pay your money and in about a week you get a nice red licence and your competitors card which you get signed by the club after each meeting

You dont have to sign up to do a season but to race with a club you must be a member, membership costs from £20 up depending on the club (although some do day membership) once you have your membership you can basically choose to do as many of that clubs rounds as you want, all you do is send in your application form with payment and if theres space you get entered to race.

If your entry is accepted you get sent several tickets for entry (again No of tickets depends on the club) plus you get a scrutineering/registration card which must pe presented at scrutineering (this then gets sighned as long as everything is ok) once signed the card is presented at sign in where you get a programme and told what practice/qualifiying session you out in and away you go

Was supposed to be mate but due to unforseen problems (wife found the 'next' sale  ) I've had to cancel due to lack of cash :a5: unfortunately that is the worst thing about racing, it drains the bank balance quite quickly :(

My next race will probably be Oulton on 2nd Sept although we mau be at Donny on 12th Aug

Hi all, I currently race with Derby Phoenix in the Formula400 and Open400 series, this is my 2nd year racing, finished 5th in the Formula400 last year after missing a few rounds due to breaking my wrist at Oulton.

Ermm money? Work out the amount you think you'll need and then double it :D I reckon when I do a weekends worth of racing (2 races on Sat & 2 on Sun) plus the test day it costs me around the £600 mark.. That doesn't include things like buying the bike, tyre warmers etc etc.....

I think my novice season cost me about 12k to do all the rounds, that included buying the bike plus kit, bear in mind I'm only running a ZXR400 and not a new gixer ;)

Run a 99 srad with clubs like preston &district , aintree, wirral 100 crewe&south cheshire.
as cheap a possible really.I'm prob what you'd call a grass roots racer (trailer & gazebo!)entries vary from £75 for 2 races upwards. then running costs and practice days on top. big money comes when U bin it big time!!! (dont do it) Not a hard process really to get goin, feels a bit daunting, but most clubs are friendly, and there will be plenty other novices in same boat. 10 signatures & 3 circuits to lose ya novice bib. BE WARNED ITS ADDICTIVE:a13:

We race a GSXR 750 K6 in the Hottrax Endurance series. Which we have found to be an outstanding way of getting a load of track time. Hottrax run 2hr tag endurance races where you and your mate turn up and lierally pass the transponder - maximum session time is 30mins each - so you get an hour each racing. The two hour race entry fee is between £250 - £300 betwen the two of you and this includes an hours practice in the morning - so its track day money.

The big boys race is the 6 or 8 hour race, where its one bike and two to three riders, the maximum session time is 70mins, and as you can imagine, you do know your way round a track after 2 and a bit stnts of that length. It's great for honing your track skills, unlike the huury up and wait 8 lap dashes other clubs are forced to run. The six hour entry fee is between £650 - £950 as it is for this weekends 8 hour race at Snetterton and that is split three ways. Once you add fuel tyres and other consumables your average costs per race is around £550 - £700 for which you get a hell of a load of track time.

If your passing Snetterton this bank holiday weekend - pop in and say hello, were Blackcat Racing and as noted there's an K6 and an SRAD that will be wobbling around on the track day Sat and the race Sunday.

I started out racing in a proddy 250 series for a couple of seasons, then switched to Endurance racing m(6/8hrs)... our first season we entered endurance as a 'toe dipper' on a K1 gsxr600. The following season we went for it proper, on a K5 750, and finished 3rd in the 750 championship.

This season the team have switched to Ducati's and back to sprint racing in the Ducati Desmodue series. I am currently 7th in the Class A championship, and only a couple of rounds to go, but 6th has extended the gap, and 8th, 9th and 10th have closed the gap....

I've just joined the forum after buying a 1000 K7, which I will be racing at Cadwell next weekend with Derby Phoenix.....Been struggling with a Ducati 1098 all year and have taken a big hit to my results and my bank balance!! Hope the GIXER can redress the balance a little. This is my third season, raced a K5 last year...If anyone is at Cadwell pop in for a coffee and a chat. My race number will be #2, Mike Chappell

There are some real long answers to that one...I'm not gonna give one of them.

Just get the ticket from rugby, pick a club, wap on some lockwire and have a blast...its awesome!
We spent months worrying and getting ready...you forget it all when you enter that holding bay...
Try North gloucester, I recommend them.

Racing, its just spend spend spend, but really is worth it!
One point that doesnt seem to have been provided Tink, you get your ACU licence (PAY), join a club (PAY) then you apply for entries, you only pay when you apply for your entries, you dont need to stump up for a seasons racing up front!
You'll end up with a grin on your face and a very light wallet (unless you pawn the wallet to pay for some tyres!)

the cheapest form of racing with the most tracktime has to be the HMRC endurance. you get an hour racing each, if a 2 man team doing the junior 2 hr. no complex rules for bike eligability, as its aimed to get the trackday rider into racing, so almost all modifications are allowed. its only a bit more than doing a TD.

cost for silverstone was £325 a team... so £162.50 each, for practice and qualifying and race time. you would have been required to join the HMRC club at £25 for the season.

other than that, theres not alot of upfront money. the junior endurance did offer the guarantee of the same race number and a guaranteed race slot if you paid £250 upfront at the start of the year, but then you had £50 deducted from your race entry at each round, so you effectively got yout money back.

i'm expecting the grids to be alot fuller for the 2 or 3 hr junior series next year.....

i'll be running in the senior 6hr next year.. ;)

I have raced Sidecars at club and national level for 10 years now!
Last season raced an F1 sidecar powered by a K2 Gixer 1000 motor.
Mostly raced this year at Darley Moor ended 3rd in club championship, thats poo, but we crashed out once and did not complete the last two rounds.
Next year a brand new bike fitted with K6 Gixer 1000 and i will be racing in the British F1 Sidecar Championship run at MRO meetings.
And the cheapest way to go racing is to become a sidecar passenger, just get your license and then pay half entry and thats it once you have got a ride with a driver like me, you don't need to buy a bike or anything like that, it's an easy life being a passenger! Anybody fancy doing it?

It is worse now then when I was late teens/twenties and actually doing it. I bore people rigid with race tales (even minimoto race tales recently), now bore them rigid with trackday tales. I thought I could resist the calling but I'm weak lol

I loved that feeling of fear and excitement. First time I ever sat on a grid I nearly wet myself I felt so out of my depth but when that flag drops or the lights change, it is the best feeling in the world and the grin aches for days after. Now it's the back or knees that ache.

I bought the K3 600 as it was all ready to go racing with enough spares to see me through a season. All I need now is to find a hypnotist who will erase any activity around racing from my wife's mind.

:a21: flyinwalrus is right, i am doing my 1st year racing, i started in 125 with team called rsr racing, they help you get into racing, not very helpfull tho, but its not really hard when you know how, basically book acu course, get test pass cert, fill in form from acu, get eye test ring a club(am with emra) join send them you acu form with everything that needs to be returned to acu, then wait for you liecence to come, by this time you would have got your regs and race dates from your club, fill them in send money and regs off 30days before race, buy all things you need this is when racing gets pricey, ie; transponders, kitiing bike out for acu regulations, tyres, transport, list goes on, but man once you have done that 1st race theres no going back you will be hooked, life changes, every penny goes on racing, be nice to your wife/gf or she'll be gone hehe, hope this helps mate, good luck

Used to run British super stocks and supersport sold my house to pay off the visa bills now do Derby pheonix when time permits and Hotrax endurance cos they give you good track time. From experience one make series are the best to do such as gsxr cup cos there are always bits around the paddock if your short of something and racing is closer. No racing is cheap though and bloody addictive, but worth it.

I always wanted to give it a go but it's just a giggle to me instead of the few track days I normally do in the UK.
I haven't spent much on the bike and given that I'm over 40 and don't exactly have the correct physique for it, I'm not exactly going to be next Lorenzo. But my philosophy and approach is from a fun perspective and if I don't enjoy it, I'll move on to the next motorcycle experience.
Sorry if that's not in line with other racers mentality but each to their own.
