I really fancy giving this a bash next year. Anyone on here done it this year?
Thoughts / advice?

Yes!! I did Snett yesterday.
Got called in as a last minute replacement and had a top time.
Nearly as much tracktime as a trackday and you're racing. A lot of fun, le mans start and you can plug a tv in to watch laptimes and places change.
Have lots of pics, I'll post 'em up.

SNETT PICS (http://www.stevethorp.co.uk/bikes/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=167&Itemid=74)
We finished 7th with a 3 man team. Most teams had 2 riders and did a lot less stops which is where we suffered -but we wanted 2 goes each and weren't taking it too seriously. My rubbish start didn't help either, wheelying lent over into a wobble saw me go from 5th to 20th! Soon got back to 4th though.
Great value as it's £300 for a team, with 40min practice, 20 qualifying each and 2hrs racing between us. So £100 for 1hr 40 of riding!
Can't say I'd fancy the 8hr ones though..

Thanks mate - and nice pics.
How many teams were there?
And how good do you need to be?

Hi Martin,
There were 20 teams I think and a huge spread of abilities.
I'd guess the slower laps out there were 1:30's and the quickest 1:12's.
1:16's but consistent would see you up near the front.
It's a lot more relaxed than a normal 6 lap club race and a lot more spread out on track (20 on track evenly spread after the first few minutes)
A lot less forceful overtaking too, I found myself waiting until after the corners to overtake a lot of the time, where as normally I'd just stuff it up people.
Great way to start racing I'd say, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, I'd just go for it. I think it's the easiest route into racing and very good VFM unlike everything else!

martin i fancy a bash next year mate if ya lost for a team player ... how many in team 2 or 3??? was it 20 min stints ?
stevethorp

The teams that did well had 2 riders.
You are only allowed to ride for 30mins max or you're penalised. But I guess the best stragety is to ride for 29mins and do as few stops as possible and let the slower riser do the shorter stint at the end.
We had 3 riders and did 2 twenty minute stints each, nice and fair, but not very quick.
The extra stop possibly cost us a minute, you'd have to ride 3secs a lap quicker than anyone else for the last 20mins to make that back!
Our fastest lap was only about 0.5 off that of the winners and we finished 7th. The team that did the fastest lap (a 1:12) didn't finish anywhere in the end (team RHR i think) as they had problems.

Hi Matt - I have a couple of mates interested at the mo - but will let you know how it goes. Also useful to have back-up riders in case I guess.
As Mr Thorpe says, it is 2 or 3 riders with a max of 30 mins per ride and a min break of 15 minutes.

race entry for silverstone is being sent in today....
i'm also on the trackday on the 5th, to get some practice in, as i've never done the national circuit, and only done the GP circuit once, but booked on again for the GP on the 11th of this month.
will be intersting to see how my 750 fares agaisnt the rest of the 1000's we are racing against
will be good to see anyone that fancies coming to see what its all about.

I'm hoping to do the GP on 11th.
Can't make 5th for the Trackday but hoping to do the National on 30th Sept.

I'm thinking about doing this next year, too. LB let me know how the 750 performs as I'd be on the same bike and so would my potential team mate.

Likewise - I'm on a 750. It shouldn't be a disadvantage at Silverstone as it is the National Track not the GP.

If you look at the times for Snett, you'll see that even a 600 could do well in the overall with a couple of quick riders onboard.
For example, the team who finished second overall in the junior, had a fastest lap of 1:14:9 and a second fastest of 1:15:1 (by the fastest rider), times a 600 could do.
I think next year might be more competitve though, as people think about having a proper crack at it and getting faster teams together. I know I am.

if it floats our boat we'll do the whole season next year. it'll be a bit different not going into the first corner holding your breath with your eyes closed.
fitness levels will need to come up a bit though.

well, i'm all set for saturday.. the bike has been prepped and lockwired, race numbers 127 fitted, even got some gixerjunkies stickers which arrived today to be fitted.
racing under the name of "throttlemonkey juniors" as the throttlemonkey trackday and race website is where i spend most of my time, there's 5 teams off there entering for this weekend, (most of us racing for the first time), stevethorpe is also entered assuming his bikes all back together, so should be good fun.
its my first ever race, so just want to finish and put in a good account of myself.
i think we are in garage 8a if anyone is coming to watch and i've got a blue gsxr 750 k6

Yes, I know John,
I didn't see you at Silverstone but John was there in an advisory role. I also live very close, so we are all Southampton lads.
P.M me for a chat or a night down the pub if you like.
Any way third win of the season was great and we didn't expect it without John or Vance riding.

No didnt manage to get to silverstone, as i high sided the week before coming onto hangar , so my nice new k7 600 was also slightly damaged. only panels and bent peg so came off quite well. and the bruised lung and broken ribs. And the funny thing was when it carried on down hangar straight under its own momentum and i tried to a run and catch it up before it fell over. At 1 point i thought it was going to sit itself against the barrier. Well i'm still up for joining hmrc and doing some racing, but being in the army i dont know where i'll be in the world, so hopefully get at least 1 or 2 races next season. well i'll chat soon and maybe go for a :drink:
Ok.
Hope you're well soon.

OK - well I've sent off a Team Application for 2008 - Pirate Racing is born!
We expect to be battling it out in the bottom end of the pack - but looking forward to it.

The big but is, I dont know of anyone who can commit with me. I probably wont do all races, due to work commitments but just want to have a go. I have done my ACU training day, and just want to give racing a go. I Have a gixer k7 600 so if there is someone who also wants just to give it a go please get in contact, If we use our own bikes and split costs for everything else, it should be good.:b3:
