Grab a cup of tea coffee, sorry its long, probably the longest report ever…… but I’m still buzzing :mmm:

Myself and my mate (nicknamed yoda) decided earlier in the year to dip our toe into the world of endurance racing as i fancied giving racing a go, but dodnt fancy the idea of a 5 lap, fairing bashing race. i've been doing trackdays for a number of years, but never taken the plunge to go racing. i've been a member of the throttlemonkey forum for a couple of years, which is mainly for people who enjoy trackdays and racing, and there was a number of them also entered in various teams, many of whom it was also their first time racing. Yoda had previously done a single race as part of a team in the 8hr endurance in 2007 at snetterton, so in reality we were both very much novices.... spent the last few months getting stuff sorted, like an ACU licence, dog tags, novice bibs, bikes prepped etc plus some decent tractime on trackdays. we had decided to enter the HMRC junior 2 hr tag race, where you ride your own bike and swap the transponders over at the end of the sessions, so you dont need any quickfill systems or large capacity fuel tanks, or big teams of helpers as after your stint on track, you pit, and your team mate goes out to ride on their bike, with a maximum time of 30 minutes on track, so 4 sessions of 30 minutes in total, 2 each. very simple format and it works very well.....

I arrived at my mate Yoda’s house late Thursday night, ready for the trackday/practice day Friday. Decided to go down the night before to avoid the early start as he doesnt live far from Silverstone. Up at 6.30 am and we’re at the track for 7.30 setting up in our garage for the 2 days. I’ve never done the National circuit, so first session was about learning the track.

There were 4 groups, 15 min sessions, and I was out in the ACU/fast group rather than the ACU group that had most of the national endurance teams in. Started out just making sure the gearing was right for the club straight and bedding in some new brake pads. Got down to 1.11’s and 1.12’s but kept turning in too early for Brooklands and also for copse, and maggots was just all over the place. Sat down with the circuit guide book after the session to work on my lines, and also chatted to Yoda about Brooklands, who suggested braking a lot later after the bridge than I was doing.

Next session I was out to work on Brooklands and copse only and got them fairly well sorted by the end of the session. Times were down to 1.10’s but there was a lot of traffic, and it was still a trackday, so gentle overtakes, even though a number of people I was overtaking had red number boards and numbers, but I thought they were just getting to know the track. Still hadn’t got maggots right, but I worked on that for the next session, when I started to get some sub 1.10’s.

the session before lunch was my last on the shagged tyres left over from a recent trackday at Anglesey. I went out purposely with a low amount of fuel to see how far I could go with the fuel light on, and after 1 lap the light started flashing, but I kept on the gas for the rest of the session. 3 laps before the end, and the fuel light changed from flashing to on permanently but the bike was still fine to the end of the session. That gave me confidence for the race, knowing that if the light came on, I could do at least another 12 minutes at full race pace before worrying about the fuel.

Plenty of banter with everyone over lunchtime, then it was out for the first session after lunch on brand new tyres, as I wanted to try for some fast times on new rubber. I could do steady 1.09’s but couldn’t go any faster due to the traffic. Everytime that I felt I was on a fast lap, I’d catch someone at the wrong point which would slow me down. I knew there was a 1.08 to be done, maybe a bit more, but just couldn’t get a clear lap. After the session, we headed out to the rear car park to practice our speed test, as we didn’t want to get a penalty for speeding in pitlane, but at the same time, we didn’t want to be going too slowly in pitlane as that would be lost time, so out we went to work out what 30 mph was on our rev counters, whilst following Steve (Yoda’s mate) our team manager in his car.

The second session after lunch was to be my last for the day, as I was happy with the track and my riding. Talked with Yoda and the plan was to go out and do 2 laps behind each other and then swap over to see where each was faster than the other. This worked ok, but there was still plenty of traffic. We swapped over a couple of times, but there was still too much traffic to work on fast laps, so came in, parked the bike and started prepping for the race.

Yoda and myself had a talk about the preparation for the races, and as I had just pipped him for the fastest lap during the day, he asked me if I could do the qualifying the following day…. I was pleased, but at the same time nervous as I had never raced before, let alone done qualifying. I decided to fit some new tyres for the Saturday, a new front to scrub in during the 20 min practice session, and to use that in qualifying and the race. I had planned on using a new rear for practice and qualifying and then another new rear for the race. (I’ll take the scrubbed part worn tyres out to Spain when I go out for 3 days at Cartegena in November :dance2: )

The bike got a good clean, as well as new brake fluid and the new tyres fitted, chain adjusted, pads checked etc, then it was off to scruteneering and race sign on, then back to Yoda’s house for some food and to try to sleep.

go to part 2....

The following day, got to the track at 7.30 to get ready for the day, warmers on, bacon buttie and cup of tea then it was in for the riders briefing and then out for the practice session.

Daz Jones (ex Aprilla RSV national champion) turned up as he was our mechanic for the day and I had a few talks with him about what to do etc. out for the practice session and there still seemed to be plenty of traffic. I scrubbed in my new tyres and then tried to get some fast laps in to get up top speed. Couldn’t get on with the pit board, I just couldn’t see it against the backdrop of the catch fencing on pit wall. I came in after 6 laps, completely forgetting about the stop box on the way into the pit. The guy checking the stops was talking to his mate against the wall. I hadn’t expected to stop there in practice as they weren’t using the stop box on exit  . I was well under the pit lane limit but just as I went past him, he waved his flag at me, but it was too late for me to stop, so I put my hand up to apologise to say, “sorry should have stopped” and speaking to the guy later, he realised it was partly his fault for not being stood ready as he hadn’t expected anyone to pit so early in the session, but also he would have taken it further had I not raised my hand to apologise). Stopped outside our pit to ask Alex and Ruth (partners to yoda and steve) to hold the pit board lower to see if I could see it better and put another click of rear rebound on, then back out for a few more laps, still couldn’t see the pit board clearly, as it was just at the point where I was starting the brake and change down for copse, and I was struggling to look right and pick the board out whilst getting set for the corner. Pitted early before the session ended as there was still plenty of traffic and I wanted to save my rear tyre for qualifying.

Had a chat with the girls about the pit board, and I explained the board I could see was a mates team next door as it was bright orange. We resolved the issue by taping a bright yellow plastic bag to the top, which made it easier to see. I put a bit more fuel in the bike for qualifying then sat down and rested, as qualifying was only 15 minutes away……

The nerves were really setting in. I had a chat with Daz, Yoda and steve our team manager as to what to do in qualifying as I had never done anything like this before.. Should I go out fast straight away and get some quick times in, or build pace slowly? Daz said just to go for it when I was happy doing so, but to warm the brakes and tyres first in the out lap. Daz also reminded me that there were no prizes for qualifying, so the aim was to get a good time without taking risks. I knew with some clear track there was a 1.08 or even a 1.07 to be done, but again Steve reminded me that the race was over 2 hours, so although qualifying was important, it wasn’t as important as on a club race. I agreed with steve and yoda that if I did a lap of low 1.09’s or better, then that would be enough for a good grid position for the race and I would come in and not risk crashing.

Over the tannoy came the call for qualifying, with the pit lane opening in one minute. I looked down pitlane and there was no-one lining up. I knew how important it was to get a clear lap without traffic, so said to the guys to get the bike off the warmers as I wanted to be out at the front. My mate Speedy got there first, then two other guys, then another mate from the throttlemonkey site called gixerboy (GB) on his K3 thou then me, waiting for the track to open and the session was started. No time for nerves as we were leaving pitlane and hard on the gas. Got past 3 of the guys before the start finish line came round, and I was behind GB for the first lap, which from memory was a 1.09 ish but we had clear track. GB could pull away on the exit of the corner with his thou, but I could catch him on the brakes and turn my 750 quicker than him. On the run to brooklands, GB pulled a gap after we were almost side by side on the exit of maggots, but we caught a rider at the bridge who was on his outlap. GB made for an outside pass, but I turned it early and went up the inside of both of them and stayed ahead of GB until we got back onto the start finish line when he came back past. I looked at my laptimer on the run to maggots and it was 1.08.56, yippee, fastest lap so far………… :dance2:

I caught GB on the brakes and we were side by side again at maggots and he was pulling out again on the straight. I knocked the speed off rather than chase him and continue dicing as I had done a decent time as we had agreed as a team I would come in, and I knew if I stayed out and diced with GB, it could have ended in tears for one of us. I came down pit lane and the rest of the team were asking why I was already in, but steve and yoda knew why, as I had set a sub 1.09 time, so no need to stay out. At the time I was just faster than GB, but he stayed out for more laps, and ended up 0.3 quicker. Out of the 45 teams in total we were 13th, with GB 10th. Out of the 25 teams in the junior, we were 9th, which we were all happy with.

Then it was leathers off and try and relax, easier said than done. I was happy with my speed and confidence, just nervous about my first race. The bike was refueled, new rear tyre fitted, bolts checked etc. The start sequence came round all too quickly, and then its leathers back on and out to the track to hold the bike for yoda in the Le Mans start. The nerves are starting to bite and I’m trying to relax. Line up for the start, Yoda walks away to the other side of the track, whilst Daz is shouting at him that he’s not left the ignition on, I try and shout to, but I cant….my voice just doesn’t want to work. Daz finally gets his attention and Yoda returns to leave the bike ready for thumbing the starter and then it all goes quiet, waiting for the flag to drop. I’ve never been as nervous as this, and I’m not out riding yet. The flag drops and everyone runs across the track, that is, everyone apart from Yoda, who stumbles and falls to his knees face planting the track, but he’s back up and on the bike and away…… I make my way back to the pits whilst everyone else does their stuff. I try and stay relaxed whilst the clock ticks away…

I watched some of the other teams come in and pit to swap to the other riders, Yoda’s still out as we are running right to the 30 minutes, so he’s due to come in at 29 minutes, he’s still got 2 laps to go when another mate yella comes over to ask why I’m still in the pits, as he’s already pitted and GB’s out. Then the 2 laps are up, and I’m waiting in pit lane, engine on, and ready to go….

Yoda pits and pulls up alongside, Daz swaps the transponders and I’m off, he yells at me to remember the pit lane speed limit and I ride to the stop box on the exit. Foot down, get the nod and I’m off……

I’ve been practicing going fast from the off , on trackdays when there’s been no sighting laps, and I’m quickly on the pace. First full lap is a 1.09 and I settle into a rhythm, but there’s still lots of traffic, but this is racing and I’m not taking any prisoners on the overtakes. My favourite passing places are on the brakes into maggots and brooklands, as I seem to be able to brake much later than a lot of others, plus block passing into the chicane, which isn’t fast for lap times, but gets me past another rider. I’m doing consistant 1.08/9’s without too much drama and I know the 30 minute stint is coming to an end, when the safety car is deployed. I’ve still got 4 laps before I pit, but others are pitting under the safety car. I remember yoda and daz telling me to ride to my pit board, and as I pass the pits it clicks off another lap, and says “IN” in 3 laps. I wonder whether we should also pit under the safety car, but decide to ride to the board, as they know the whole picture. The safety car comes in and I’ve got 2 flying laps, there’s only 3 people in front of me and I’m past them by maggots and I’ve got a clear lap which is a low 1.08, then I’m in the pits, transponder swapped and sat in the garage, session over. Another mate who has turned up to watch comes over to talk to me, but I cant speak, he says he’ll come back later

I refuel the bike and get a drink, and ask how were getting on… the pace car worked in our favour and we are top 6, Yoda gets his head down and is putting in consistant laps, regular 1.09’s and I’m trying to relax speaking to lots of the other throttlemonkeys who have turned up to support all the teams riding today, and before I know it, its time to get ready to get back out there. I’m sat outside again, waiting for yoda to pit. Daz comes out ready to swap the transponders and he says we are in 3rd and can make 2nd so I’m to go for it. I cant believe we are doing as well as we are, but there’s still 30 minutes of riding to do.

I’ve asked the team to show me our place on the pit board and how far the guy behind is to me…. First lap and I’m into the 1.09’s again and the pit board shows P4 and +9…. The team now in 3rd had pitted before us, hence Daz thinking we were in 3rd, when we still had a stop to do…….. I cant believe we are 4th out of the 25 starters in the junior 2 hr endurance and I’m determined not to let the team down, so get my head down to make some time. There still seems to be plenty of slower riders out there and I’m picking them off one by one, sometimes two at a time, once I took 3 on the inside on the run to maggots. I see another mate on his “Go Fast” bike ahead and catch and pass, but he’s back past me on the power as he’s on a thou to my 750. I outbrake him at brooklands and then block pass into the chicane to get another rider between us. I try and get some fast laps in, but I get slowed by a few and the “Go Fast” bike is back past, so we dice for the next lap and I’m trying to get traffic between us to create the break. I’m back into the 1.08s but the rear tyre is starting to slide, especially on the exit at maggots. Its predictable, but I’m trying to stand the bike up before powering out. The laps tick by and I’m still seeing P4 but now its +12. I try and stay doing 1.09s without taking risks and just click the laps off. I’m struggling a bit to change up gears and I keep missing gear changes. I cant decide if its because I’m getting a bit tired or whether there’s a problem with the bike, so just try and stay smooth. (it turns out the gear linkage had come loose, so wasn’t fully engaging all the time…. )

I don’t see the chequered flag to end our race, I don’t see the waved yellows to indicate pitting, so I stay out and I’m wondering if we have finished or not as the track is clearer, still people out, some of them with red number boards, but they are carrying on doing the 6hr race, I come past the pits again as I’m still not sure our race has finished and I see the pit board being frantically waved to pit, as I’ve done 2 extra laps

Into the pits and parc ferme and the relief is immense. We have finished and finished 4th. A great result, for my first race, Yoda’s second race and by all accounts top throttlemonkey team out of the 5 teams that entered. Everyone is congratulating everyone else and re-living parts of the race and I hear about another teams problems and stop go penalty, as I expected them to beat us. We then hear there’s been a problem with the timing and the results will be re-done. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, but talk to yoda and we agree that whatever happens, it doesn’t matter as we have finished, thoroughly enjoyed it and put in a good account of ourselves.

We start packing up and the new results are out and we are 3rd………. THIRD in our first race and looking down the order, there’s throttlemonkey teams 4th, 5th and 6th so a fantastic result for everyone. :drink:

We broke out the beers and waited for prize giving. A big thanks to the other throttlemonkey teams that also waited for the prizegiving to give us a massive cheer when we collected our trophy.

So that was it, first race over, plus a signature on the ACU card that says 3rd place :a1:

Big thanks to everyone who contributed and made it happen. the craic was tremendous, the racing was great, the result was unexpected but a great reward for everyone. Thanks to everyone that helped, Andy our marshall, steve the team manager, Claire for the support and the tea and sorting the hospitality, alex and ruth for the pit board, Daz for the spannering and the words of wisdom, and most of all Yoda for being a superb team mate. I may have been marginally faster, but he did his hour on track at almost the same pace as me, so was a great team mate. His words of encouragement and calmness were very much required, and so to Yoda, a big thankyou.

So, to next year, we have decided to do the full 6hr tag championship, over the 5 or 6 races, 45 min max sessions, so 8 sessions over the 6 hrs, so are looking for another person to join the team… anyone fancy doing the full championship? Plus, we could really do with some sponsorship to help fund the team…. We have the bikes, just need help with the race entries, fuel, tyres etc etc etc

Rep added!! Makes me want to get out there and race!! Hope you get some sponsors together and get to do more next year....

(Maybe we should have a whip round and buy you 1/2 a rear in return for some larger Gixerjunkies stickers on the bike :D :D)

you should get out there and race... the junior tag endurance is designed for people that want to go to the next level, but not necessarily go fairing bashing over a 5 lap club race. its like a trackday but with some racing overtakes. there was all manor of people racing, from james mcbride, who's team finished 1 lap in front of us (he was doing 1.04's big respect for that) to other riders doing 1.16's and slower... they were still out there racing and competing and having a great time.

so, if you already enjoy trackdays, but want to dip your toe in racing, have a go at one or more of the HMRC races next year, its no more scary than a trackday, in fact, i'd argue it s a bit safer, as all the racers know not to do any stupid moves or passes, as to get a result, you have to finish..... plus, it didnt really cost much more than a usual trackday...

we came 9th in class 10th overall out of 28. (96 laps.)

we got a bit unlucky with the safety car,but the main problem was fitness the last 15 mins of each of our sessions we couldnt concentrate and i started making loads of mistakes this was a lot harder than i thought it would be.But it was great fun and we will be back next year fitter and raring to go and hopefully getting a bit a bit further up the sharp end.

my friend rich took the photo's he's put a couple on his site
