View Full Version : Track day lap timer?
Could this be used a track day laptimer?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0001ILXGQ?ie=UTF8&tag=km_10006-21
Small enough to be strapped to the yoke (or you can get a bar clamp if you have room on the clip-ons) and uses GPS so no beacon problems.
It has start/stop and auto lap function so I reckon it would be ideal. Anyone used anything similar?
how would it know you've done a lap ??
wouldn't it just measure the distance and time ?
Cant see no reason why not

taken from the blurb
"Automated stopwatch provides AutoLap™ and AutoPause™ features"
so i guess you can set it so it knows when a lap or circuit is complete
if i didnt have a lap timer i would give that a shot its not going to brake the bank is it
go for it Biaggi:acute:

Cos it only runs for a max of 5 minutes then gives up and decides you must have completed the lap by then Jase ? :D :D

only 5 mins to do a lap ? ? ? no good for me then :gix:
i thought trackday companies took a dim view of lap timing anyway being as they have to promote them as 'non timed events'

They don't like timing because it invalidates their insurance. The track day then becomes a practice day / session.
I've got the garmin 101 and it's great for running but useless on a bike or car. The processor inside isn't quick enough to log a lap at anything above 15mph, so therefore it woudln't be any good as a lap timer unless your going to average 15mph or less!!!!

Buy a ZX10, where Suzuki put Hazard lights, Kwackers have a lap timer. Go figure.
Seriously though, this looks good for a manual timer

Yer I've seen them but I'd prefer an automatic timer as they'd be more accurate against pressing the button at the right time and I'm too busy concentrating to remember!

If you have a Symbian phone ie Nokia Nseries, 66xx,Eseries etc and a bluetooth GPS, you could try RaceChrono
http://www.racechrono.com/download/?lang=en
I've used it once at the ring, but the GPS lost signal halfway round so I didnt get a result. Didnt manage to use it again as the rest was rained off. Unfortunately it hasnt got many tracks available, none in UK, but its possible to record your own laps.
Its a bit fiddly, but if you have the bits, it could be worth a try.
It does perfomance testing too - 1/4mile runs, 0-62 etc ;)

Yep!! The trackday companies DO NOT allow timing at all. Get a friend with a stop watch, mobile phone or whatever.

They tell you in the briefing I agree, but no one has ever checked my bike for a timing device.:beach:

I use a rollcentre lap timer and havnt had any problems from the TDO's but if they did see it i would just take it off, ive found a lot of tracks have their own built in transponder on the pit wall which is switched on most of the time anyway so no need to take your own and get it confiscated!!!!

Does the Rollcentre one have a manual option, i.e push button?
Anyone know of a cheap manual only timer? I had one on my bike but it's packed up now. I've got an Alfano fitted, but sometimes the manual option is the only one possible.

My rollcentre T100 doesnt have a manual feature, you have to do one full lap and go past the transponder beacon to set it up for the next lap.
I dont know of any proper lap timers which have a manual feature as they are all made to do what they say on the tin and thats time laps (accurately).
Someone else said on here that newer kwakas have built in manual laptimers as my wifes 636 does but this is all built into the bikes electrics.
I use an Alfano Pro after being told about them. They only work at tracks with the megnetic strip, but more and more tracks are going this way. Some tracks have several strips around the lap allowing you to work out your split times. It's a bulky complicated thing and mine has to be secured through the steering stem otherwise it doesn't fit anywhere. There are advantages to using an Alfano that you can probably work out for yourselves. Other than size the other disadvantage of the Alfano is it doesn't work if there's no magnetic strip.
