As you may or may not know, ive just got my 1st track bike and wanting some very sticker rubber to put on it.

Will spend most of this year floating between the novice and inter. Heard that Metzeler racetecs are the best, however they are expensive and ive heard their is a waiting list for them at the moment.

Can anyone reccomend some realy good tyres that will last about 4/5 trackday's

Thanks

I used racetecs on my K1 600 race bike this year and they were great.

Ive bought off these before, about the cheapest around unless you can find a real bargin!

not wanting to upset anyone else this week .
BUT racetecs/supercorsas etc need to be ridden hard to keep them hot, if your not on it they won't be any stickier than road tyres
You might find rennsports better they will last longer and be plenty grippy for you in the novice/inters
trackdayrider had them on his 165rwhp 1000 and they lasted well at trackdays and several laps of the Nurburgring. And he IS bloody fast. so if he can't push them I don't think us mere mortals will trouble them too much

Diablo corsa's are very good.

I used to use them on road and track, and my track day buddy was using them on his Zx10 track bike up until last year, and still uses them on his 750 track bike, and he's no slouch.

And, what Jase said. :D:D:D

Using super corsers at the mo but used racetechs which were good but like jase said you have got to work them to get the best.

Thanks for the info.

Think i might do for the racetecs for 2 reasons:-

1 - Ill be using tyre warmers so ill have a head start in the old heat department.

2 - I think ill be able to keep them warm. I was in the fast group at mallory on my K7 750 and was keeping up well enough, however the reason ill be in the novice/inter to start with is that im not sure how the K1 will handle and what the power difference will be like.

Will let you kno how i get on.

May put on a "vote" please post you opinions

can't be going that fast if your tyres last 4-5 trackdays
I get 2 out of my racetecs :(
besides racetecs ARE supercorsas

racetecs are top performers, but as said earlier you could actually be better off with a less race orientated tyre.

A std diablo corsa is a bloody good tyre and more than capable of running at the front of inters. The Viper sport is also a damn good tyre. I was at Nogaro when they were being developed and the were easily lapping at comparable times to supercorsa's

Not getting 4-5 TD out of them. Just wondered if they would last that long as i dont like parting with cash all the time.

Ahhhh daddys little soldier......So let me get this straight you get your Dad to buy the parts for your track bike & when he forgets to ask for the cash you don't offer it to him out of goodwill ???????

Have you ever though that he probably doesn't like to ask for it........

No! he does ask for the stuff he remebers (pit falls of having a chalk board, anything owing goes on there) but he also has a bad memory and a deep pocket so it dont bother him. Trust me he has no problem asking me for money.

If i remember a week or two later and tell him, he just says "forget about it".

Why you think ive not left home yet :gix:

Go for Rennsports mate, especially on a 600.

I was running Sportec M3's on road and track until then wore out and then went to Rennsports at the weekend - superb grip - even in very cold/damp conditions at Brands and Mallory.

I never had a slide out of either, from a running out of grip point of view - apart from gunning after a Supermotard on a damp patch and outbraking some other bikes - again in the damp. Both were controllable and predictable and came back in line.

First time out in the damp at Mallory I was bricking it being on Rennsports but needn't have bothered. Running around the outside of some through Gerrards by the second session.

I'm no Rossi and there's no point spending the extra cash on equipment you don't need or can't make the best use of. Hope this helps.

I ran Supercorsas in 2005. They are a great tyre but the rear (medium compound) only lasted 2 races (8 laps each) at a circuit like brands or snett, where the bike is on it's side on the gas for a long period of time and it's spinning, before they were past their best.

Have only ridden on racetecs in damp contidions so haven't pushed them as hard, but as someone said there are pretty much the same tyre.

We had to run Bridgstone BT-002 this season as a control tyre. I have to say I was very impressed with them. Not as sticky as the other two, but for what you want them for, probably worth looking at. Last longer to.

Just my 2 pence worth!

I've used both and have concluded that the Corsa's last a tad longer and that's the only difference as far I'm concerned.
In any case, most modern tyres are better than your average Joe:whistle:

Although yes they are essentially the same tyre (actually the same company) I've been told (and noticed myself) that the Pirelli's have a tad more grip but dont last long whereas the Metzelers dont have quite as much grip but last longer, the Pirellis also have a slightly steeper profile. Racetecs are perfectly good and grip bloody well, I ran them pretty much all this year and had no real problems plus it'll be easier to find race scrubs, but next year if I can find em I'll be using Pirellis

cant go wrong with the rennesports, value for money at the moment £130 a pair, i have got racetec's on now and i use them on the road and track and i have had no problems with them, they do take a bit of heating up but once hot plenty of grip!

but if your worried about splashing cash then rennsports because racetecs and supercorsa's are more expensive and wont last as long!

The thing is that a lot that is talked about sticky tyres is not always good advice.
Yes sticky tyres are good, but there are a few buts :)

For a super performance tyre to work correctly it has to be up to temperature.
Track tyres have a narrower performance temp range that more road biased tyres.

So on cooler days - ie thisw time of year. if your on track then you would get more benefit from a tyre that works better at a lower temperature...

The biggest factor with sticky tyres is confidence.

But...(another)

I can garauntee (sp?) that if you put the crappest bakelite tyres you could find then put Ron Haslam on the bike he would still blitz us trackdayers if they were on the latest sh:t hot super sticky performace track tyre.

Its easy to get sucked into buying the supposed stickyest tyre you can, but Its not neccessarily what you need.

Ive tried both and liked the Racetec front as it had a steeper profile
With Racetec front and Supercarsa rear I got the quickest steering.
As fot the grip Id say they are evenly matched.
If you want them to last long, why not go for slicks??

The Rennsports are excellent value for money, but bevare of the manufacturing date as they are probably rather dated

In my opinion, unless you are fast and work the tyres hard, then stay away from Slicks whatever the compound. Basically, you have to work them hard to keep the heat up. If you are a novice you will be too slow to benefit, especially on a cold day.

deej
17-12-2007, 22:03
so in normal riding conditions do slicks last longer than a set of racetecs ??

and how quick would you need to be to run slicks,im probably very near the slower end of a fast group

Racetechs are great but they just last a weekends racing before shagged. The rear would never last that length of time, let alone the front.
