Really sad news that - it was in 2007 and still is in 2008
RIP :(
Mr Moyles was critical about Bruce Hannay & the chief sector marshal. it was a tragedy & the people involved with Marshalling the 26th are still suffering. It didn't take long for the health & safety doom mongers to say it will be the end of the TT. It's easy to point the finger at the marshals, as MCN does every year, but without the riders & marshals both unpaid groups (costing some a large amount of money) there would be no TT.
The marshals, riders & spectators all understand that there are serious risks involved in road racing & I for 1 will be out there this year doing my bit to keep it as safe as possible.
as MCN does every year
I disagree with that comment - I seem to remember the MCN singing the praises of the unpaid Marshalls after that news was released, they were and still do support the IOM they were the only bike media that stated "the IOM TT is by definition a dangerous race due to it's location and route" what they did say is some of the Marshalls were untrained and not capable of doing the job properly.
To be honest I am sick of people slagging the MCN when it's usually got lots of info that we the biking public supply so whether it's fact or not is debatable. They are always on the bikers side unlike some of the glossy crap thats not worth reading...Maybe its the poor mans magazine as its not in the league of the £4.99 glossy mags....
I like reading it and they sell enough in this country - they have over 15000 in the bike sales supplement which is considered to be a safe method of selling unlike some of the others.
So all you that like to slag it off try writing to them and putting your two penneth in maybe it will improve...
You seem to feel strongly about MCN - there are many and varied journals, periodicals etc. which cater for the full range of the 'biker' market.
However - every year MCN appear to launch an attack on the TT - if they are representing 'biker views' how come so many 'bikers' attend the event and yet a large number presumably are MCN readers?
The tragedy last year affected everybody greatly - if more bikers etc. volunteered to be trained and marshall at the event - perhaps the event could be even safer - the TT Marshalls association is running several Incident Management Courses (IMC) throughout the country this year.
If MCN is appealing to such a wide market of bikers - how come it is a rare occurance that they actually report on the TT in a favourable light?
Do you even read it? They had a pullout supplement on the TT centenary - I haven't seen any bad press about the TT to be honest from any direction...Its always highly regarded by all, well at least I think it is....It is the jewel in the crown of road racing is it not?....I met a couple of Aussies and New Zealanders there come all that way for the TT.....The TT by its very nature is going to be dangerous and everyone knows that but one life is one too many if it can be avoided...Everyone gets their heads together to work out safer things then all good...as long as it does not get nanny on the case.....the tossers will ban it as it's too dangerous for us and we need protecting.....
As for the MCN sometimes it's the only bike related thing to buy between the glossy mags....anything is better than sodall.....
They sang the praises of McGuinees and Farquar etc...Sorry but I think you are a bit biased, maybe you have your reasons...I read anything bike related I don't neccessarily believe it all......bit like the normal papers...no it's not sorry I do not buy or read them period, it's all crap in those......
You are there and on the spot so to speak, so I shouldn't attempt to comment on that as you are much more informed and knowledgablethan I....lets wait and see if they knock it this year....can't see it personally but you never know...they usually do special offers on ferries accommodation etc in it so it can't be that bad....
Been reading it for over 30 years! Even more impressed that they even gave away a little booklet of Manx Gaelic. However the point is that if the nanny state could it would stop road racing taking place. The major problem is most people only see the Island for a few weeks over the TT festival, people who live here have to put up with so much misinformation in the "popular" bike press written by journalists with no more idea or experience than a holiday maker. I certainly wouldn't point the finger at any individual or publishing house.
Maybe if £4.99 glossies didn't so much crap that appears to encourage some idiot thats just passed a direct access course to ride like a raad racht hero maybe the casualty rate of 2002 during practice week would have been lower.
That is a matter for each person to decide upon.
To get a true insight into the mind of a TT competitor don't read about it, take one for a drink there's plenty here or take the radical step - do the training and come join us marshalling - all are welcome!!!!
I wish I could - I would love to be able to move there, lovely place although like you say I only see it when its full of visitors....As for taking a competitor for a drink that would be a bonus....be great conversation, well I'd be listening anyway don't know if I could say anything worthwhile in return.....
I'd also jump at the chance to Marshall but I would've thought there was a queue for that there....
Like you say the reporters/journalists only visit when the TT is on so they will only report what they see and do, if they have to they will jazz the stories up cos thats what most of them do anyway....
Anyway I like the IOM and sorry if you only see us for the TT but hey, have you ever visited Great Yarmouth?............ No....... don't blame you.....lots of people love it for some strange reason....
Maybe this year it will go without any glitches and no fatals hey? whatever it will be - it will be the best road race in the world......fact...........
Always will be the greatest road race. We are always short of marshals, can never have too many. If you want a drink with some race heroes the great Stue Robson, (hit the wall at Balla Spur at 130mph & landed in a tree smashed to buggery) is always a man for a laugh.
Yarmouth? not a bad place for tourists like me. Have a good time at the festival Wooiney(matey), long may it last.

Read this thread with interest, in general I have found all the motorcycle press fairly even handed over the TT, people die, they report it, people don't die they report it, one is always in a better light than the other. A couple of years ago MCN really went for the TT, since then there have been many changes and they have been complimentary, as they should be. Even handedness again.
One thing to think about is that as individuals we all have our opinions, they all differ, in the UK and the Island we have the right of free speech, we can all say what we want, some of the motorcycling press actually state that the article is the view of the author and may not be the view of the publisher. That's what free speech is all about, the press (in general) goes for sensationalism - it sells papers/magazines. I suppose the answer is to read all the motorcycle press for what it is and don't take it too seriously. I read MCN every week and have done for 25 years and continue to do so, I also read a number of the glossies and am able to make my own mind up.
Mind you I must admit that MCN's stance on that idiot Brunstrom is spot on.
Problems with the TT, oh yes, just look at the course, it's condition etc. Compared to my first the changes made from a safety point of view have been stella, but as long as there are newcomers wishing to race and the number s grow every year there is always a risk. These guys know the risk they take and they continue to do it and have done for 100 years and still they come.
Yes there are administration problems, there are too many people involved in the process as a whole ACU, FIM, MMCC, DOT, DTL and on and on, things are going to get missed and do. Don't knock the marshals they do a sterling job, I don't marshal because I like to watch the races from different points, I don't view from a restricted area, but if I go somewhere that I think might be slightly dangerous I make an assessment of the risk and take an adult decision - as did the guys at the 26th. I for one do not wish to live in a nanny state where I am not allowed to make a judgement call, if it doesn't hurt anyone else then surely that is my choice?
Rant over!

BOYS please calm down
MCN has to report things like this the link doesnt suggest to me in anyway that the reporter is slagging off the marshalls.
I know a coulple of lads who are a marshall and they seen things that id never wish anyone to see.
Its a terrible tragic accident and reding sounds like its paperwork and bad communication , we r all only human and mistakes will be made, its shame that people have had to die but their deaths are a lesson learnt.
My heart goes out to their families
Chewy like u I like to have a mooch around and watch from different points , and it is up to us as spectators the choose where we stand and make that judgement
Its okay no-ones getting upset or wound up....
Theres not a biker in the world that wouldn't support the IOM TT or the marshalls that marshal it....As said previously its the Jewel in the crown of road racing.....
I just noticed the MCN getting a slagging again as it quite often does on here...I like the MCN its the only thing bike related paper and input during the winter and it does have lots of diverse stuff in it...agreed some of the items are a bit over the top but I usually find it's like all news you take it or leave it.....some is sensationalism some is just point of view....either way its a bout bikes and biking.....
Long live the TT and the same for the Marshalls without them there would not be a TT...

Here's to the next 100!! :wh:
Well said mate. We all know the risks whenever we choose to do anything "dangerous". Some people would stop us having bikes "for our own good", the nanny state across has gone far enough.
I'm all for free speech & freedom of choice.
