Martin Finnegan whom i had got to to know quite well as he was a friend of my wifes was tragically killed today at the Tandagree road races when his bike seized.Initially it was given as gearbox failure but investigation is ongoing. He leaves behind Brenda his wife of only 5 months, and Rachel his daughter, who will be 3 at the start of June.Thoughts are with all his family and friends.

RIP BIG FINNEGAN!

I'm very sad to hear this - a big loss to roadracing. One of my favourite riders; I remember watching him backing it in to the last corner at Tandragee about 3 years ago!! Fantastic style on a bike! Condolances to the family.

terrible crash, R.I.P #45 and speedy recovery to the spectators (one of whom I helped off the circuit was in a lot of pain and currently in coleraine hospital), bike seized, locked the rear into marlacoo corner, Martin left the bike while travelling at serious speed over a slight crest and both went pretty much head-on into a steep embankment, then up through a timber fence on top. one marshal was blessed he got out of the way in time. tragic accident and really hope not to witness anything like it again.

He had it all, the style, charisma, confidence, talent and a real ambassador for the sport he loved. my heart dropped when I spotted those numbers 4 and 5 on what was left of his bike when it came to a stop as I knew the outcome was not going to be good, sad day for road racing and sincere condolences to his family and friends.

really gutted, one of my fav riders to watch, spectacularly confident with the bike in the air, and one of the best riders for the photographers to take pics of.

will really miss his riding, another superb road man taken for the sport he loved

It was a bad day when the news came through about Finbar alright.

I was watching live updates of the event when the news of the accident came through. I, along with many others, all hoped that everything would be ok and the big man would pull through. Sadly that didn’t happen.

Finnegan was a larger than life character, a friendly guy who always had time for a chat, laugh and a bit of craic. His racing attributes are obviously so well documented and despite a poor 2007 due to one thing and another, he bounced back this year with the JMF/Millsport Yamaha squad. It looked as if Martin was back to his best, especially after some scintillating performances at the Cookstown and the winning the Open race at the Tandragee before that fateful accident.

I believe that Martin was going to be a force to be reconned with during 2008. He was back to his best and returned to the Yamaha stable which he had so much success previously.

It’s difficult to face another loss of such a character, friend and icon to Irish motorcycle racing. It was at the same event last year that John Donnan lost his life, which adds to the loss and mourning.

I can only wonder what may have happen if things had been different on that day. We can ask so many questions surrounding the event but the fact of the matter remains that a man has lost his life. He has left behind his beloved wife and young daughter.

Martin Finnegan was a superb guy, and he will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him and even who saw him race. I think that the escort that he had to his home in Lusk was something which summed up how highly Martin was thought off. I hope that, that will bring some comfort to the family.

I would like to extend the sympathies and thoughts of myself and the whole Jonny Annett Racing squad to the Finnegan family at this very difficult time.

Godspeed Big Man!
