Scottish rider Stuart Easton took his first ever Macau GP victory when he defeated Michael Rutter by 2.722 seconds after 15 tough, demanding laps of the 3.8-mile Guia circuit. Riding the Shaun Muir Racing run Doosan Honda, Easton took control when early pace setter Cameron Donald (Relentless Suzuki) was forced to retire on the 5th lap and despite coming under intense pressure from Rutter and the NW200 Ducati, he edged away in the closing stages for a popular win.

It was Donald who grabbed the holeshot and he led down to the Lisboa corner where Rutter nipped through but there was drama back in the pack when Dan Linfoot slid off, taking Bruce Anstey and Rico Penzkofer with him. At the head of the field though, Rutter led at the end of the first lap but he was soon relegated to third as Donald and Easton set a searing pace.

The duo pulled away and Donald was looking extremely strong but as he exited the final corner to start his 5th lap, the bike suddenly lost power and he coasted to a halt. Easton grabbed the initiative and had over 3 seconds in hand over Rutter at the end of six laps with pole setter Conor Cummins overcoming a bad start to move up to third. Rutter though was eating into Easton's lead and by lap 10 he was only 0.3seconds behind.

By this time though, Cummins, Steve Allan and Mark Miller had all been forced to retire with the extreme heat causing numerous problems to the machinery and tyres; indeed, the race turned into one of high attrition with no less than 11 retirements.

Rutter looked poised to take the lead at any time but Easton was putting in a perfect race and although backmarkers came into play, no time was either gained or lost and the status quo remained. At the end of the 12 laps, Easton's lead was down to 0.16s but for the remainder of the race he gradually edged away, gaining a few tenths each lap and he was able to cross the line almost 3 seconds clear. The win gave Muir's team a massive lift after Guy Martin's practice crash and Easton's victory couldn't have come at a better time for the 24-year old.

All of the drama allowed John McGuinness, riding alone for much of the race, to take third for his 8th podium in 11 Macau GP appearances whilst Portugese rider Luis Carreira had the best result of his career in 4th. He had been relegated to 5th on the last lap by American Michael Barnes but as the second Vent Axia Honda rider ran wide on the final corner, he manged to outdrag him to the line and got the verdict by just 0.02s!

Barnes had come through the pack well after a sluggish start and the same applied to Crumlin's Stephen Thompson who got stronger as the race wore on and secured a fine 6th place. Ian Hutchinson took seventh on the sole surviving Aviva Kawasaki just ahead of Jeremy Toye who had looked good for a top 5 finish until overshooting the Lisboa Corner. Marc Fissette and Rui Reigoto rounded out the top ten with Keith Amor in 11th, the first of the 600cc riders to finish.
