WSS: Last gasp Sofuoglu denies Laverty
Kenan Sofuoglu has won his second World Supersport round of the season at Miller Motorsports Park after two daring last lap manoeuvres got the better of long-time leader Eugene Laverty.

Although it was a four-way fight for the lead, it was Laverty who looked set for a third race win of the season on the Parkalgar Honda after snatching the lead on the second lap and holding the position for the following 17 laps.

Indeed, with the field strung out further than has been the case at more recent Supersport events, Sofuoglu had to work his way into contention following an average start from sixth on the grid, but was latched onto the back of Joan Lascorz by the mid-way stage.

Disposing of the pole sitting Kawasaki on lap 14, the top three entered the final lap line astern, with Laverty leading Crutchlow and Sofuoglu.

For a time it looked as though Crutchlow was lining up his pass on Laverty, but would instead be caught out by Sofuoglu who hustled his Honda past and maintained his line to hold onto the position.

With just a few corners remaining, Sofuoglu quickly gathered himself together to pull a similarly bold move on Laverty, the pair making contact as the Ten Kate machine slipped beneath its Parkalgar counterpart. With no chance to respond, Sofuoglu rounded the final bend to a chorus of appreciation, the Turk visibly delighted with his feat as he crossed the line.

Laverty clung onto second to further close the gap down to championship leader Crutchlow, who shadowed him in third position. The gap between the two is now down to nine points.

Lascorz kept a watching brief in fourth to keep his points ticking over, well ahead of Fabien Foret, who got the better of Garry McCoy in the latter stages. The Triumph rider ran fourth early on and with Gianluca Nannelli shadowing him on the second BE1 machine, the manufacturer looked set for a fine result. However, while McCoy held on for sixth, Nannelli would fall and finish a lowly 16th.

Andrew Pitt made fine progress from the back of the grid following his qualifying fall, to edge out Michele Pirro, Matthieu Lagrive and Anthony West.
